Residential Paving

Simulated Stone paving done by Excel Pave – Ebotse Golf Estate.

Concrete precast paving bricks are used throughout the world to provide a surface that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

They are manufactured in a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes.

The best manufacturers products carry the SABS mark.

Bond Brick

Bond Brick is the traditional paving brick. It is economical without compromising on quality and is available in a large variety of colors.

Double bond or Split bevel

Double bond or Split bevel pavers give the attractive look of Cobble. They are easy to lay and are as durable as Bond Brick.

Cottage Stone pavers

Cottage Stone pavers have a look that compliments both modern and traditional style buildings. Cottage Stone are very uniform in size and are smooth without being slippery.

Masonique pavers

Masonique pavers are larger than Bond brick and their size gives them a unique charm and appeal. Like Cottage Stone, Masonique blend naturally with the environment.

Flagstone pavers

Flagstone pavers  larger than 300 x 300mm are traditionally manufactured in moulds using “wet cast” concrete method. A new trend has emerged where manufacturers of “dry cast” paving are now producing Flagstones using the dry cast method.

Flagstone pavers continue

These Flagstone paving are more economical than “wet cast” Flagstone and are ideally suited for paving at shopping malls,  walkways, public squares, patios and swimming pool surrounds.

The method of laying these dry cast Flagstone is on a River Sand cement screed with Plaster Sand and cement being grouted into the joints.

Simulated stone

Simulated Stone is the name used to describe concrete products that are made in moulds and as the name suggests, these products are made to look like stone.

Simulated Stone manufacturers produce a large variety of paving and cladding products. The best way to view these products is to look at the websites of Smartstone and Creative Stone.

Ground Preparation

The 4 main aspects of base preparation are:

  • Correcting the levels of the ground to ensure water drainage off the paving.
  • Removal of unsuitable vegetation, top soil or anything that would hinder the compaction of the soil. For a really solid base a good quality G5 material should be added to ensure a solid base is constructed.
  • The base must be compacted to its optimum density by mixing in the correct amount of water and compacting the base using a vibrating roller. The paving bricks should be laid on well graded river sand with a minimum thickness of 25mm and maximum of 35mm.
  • Paving needs to have a border around it to create the shape and give a strong edge by placing this border on a concrete foundation

On certain projects ground conditions require the use of earth-moving machines to remove unwanted material. Thereafter G5 material stabilized with cement is used to construct the base.
